Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation received $4 million for an interim project that would repair and reopen the five miles of State Route 88 (Apache Trail) between the Fish Creek Hill Overlook (milepost 222) and milepost 227 near the Reavis Trailhead and Apache Lake Marina Road that has been closed since 2019 due to flooding damage resulting from the Woodbury Fire scar.

ADOT’s interim project will restore access for vehicles with high clearance or four-wheel drives or utility terrain vehicles.

Project Elements

  • Removing boulders on Fish Creek Hill
  • Mitigating rockfall as needed between Fish Creek Hill Overlook and Fish Creek (mileposts 222-223.5)
  • Making repairs to retaining walls
  • Installing new signage
  • Cleaning and potentially replacing damaged drainage culverts

What to Expect

ADOT maintenance crews are working into the summer, when contracted work is expected to begin to safely reopen the highway for high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles and utility task vehicles.
